Nicholas Tong is a Senior Legal Associate with Amica Law LLC, and has been in practice for 4 years, focusing on intellectual property and, in particular, IP litigation, protection and management.

Nicholas graduated with a LL.B. (Hons.) degree from the National University of Singapore in 2015 and was called to the Singapore Bar in 2016. During his time at NUS, Nicholas was also an Undergraduate (Merit) Scholar and a freelance web designer.


Nicholas’ work includes:

  • Advisory work on all aspects of intellectual property law;

  • Advising on the availability of trade marks for registration in Singapore, including conducting trade mark clearance searches and trade mark portfolio management;

  • Filing, registering and prosecuting trade mark applications;

  • Advising on contentious intellectual property and commercial litigation matters, including trade mark, copyright and patent infringement, passing off, and contractual disputes;

  • Drafting and advising on contracts relating to intellectual property and commercial matters, including assignment, licensing and franchise agreements; and

  • Advising on domain name dispute resolution.

  • Matters in which Nicholas has been involved include:

  • Drafting of unit, area and master franchise agreements for a regional food and beverage company;

  • Successfully appealed on behalf of an international manufacturer of porcelain stoneware tiles before the Court of Appeal in trade mark opposition proceedings (see Ceramiche Caesar SpA v Caesarstone Sdot-Yam Ltd [2017] 2 SLR 308; [2017] SGCA 30);

  • Successfully obtained an order for an international manufacturer of watches to seize and destroy trade mark-infringing goods seized by Singapore Customs;

  • Advised a major ticketing agency operating in Singapore on the potential liability of data intermediaries under the Personal Data Protection Act 2012;

  • Advised a major telecommunications company operating in Singapore on whether internet service providers (ISPs) are obliged to divulge personal particulars associated to allegedly infringing IP addresses in a potential copyright  infringement action;

  • Assisting an American multinational mass media and entertainment conglomerate in enforcing its intellectual property rights against unauthorised uses of Star Wars properties;

  • Assisting an American multinational coffee company and coffeehouse chain in enforcing its intellectual property rights against confusingly similar uses of its brand assets;

  • Assisting an international supplier of diamonds in patent litigation relating to, inter alia, a patent for optical quality chemical vapour deposition diamond material and the method for its production; and

  • Managing and assisting in the managing of trade mark portfolios of various companies, including an international tobacco company, a multinational mass media and entertainment conglomerate, an American financial and commodity derivative exchange, a Chinese sustainable-living lifestyle and real estate group, and a Japanese manufacturer and distributor of luxury cosmetics.
