New Patents and Trade Marks Acceleration Programmes in Singapore
On 20 May 2025, the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (“IPOS”) will be launching new Patents and Trade Marks Acceleration programmes to help filers receive faster office actions.
The new Patents and Trade Marks Acceleration programmes are known as the SG Patents Fast and SG Trade Marks Fast programmes. These supersede the SG IP FAST pilot programme which concluded on 31 December 2024, shifting the focus from an accelerated grant/registration to accelerated office actions with defined timelines. The SG Patents Fast and SG Trade Marks Fast programmes will feature simplified eligibility criteria to benefit enterprises and innovators. The new programmes were developed with feedback from the industry who found the SG IP FAST pilot programme useful but could be enhanced.
SG Patents Fast
The SG Patents Fast programme accelerates the issuance of office actions. In particular, 2 acceleration options are available:
-
SG Patents Fast 4: Receive a first office action within four months of successful application; and
-
SG Patents Fast 8: Receive a first office action within eight months of successful application.
Successful SG Patents Fast applications will qualify for acceleration of subsequent office actions, which will be issued within four months.
The following official fees for acceleration are applicable:
Search and examination options Fee for SG Patents Fast 4 Fee for SG Patents Fast 8
Accelerate search and examination S$ 1,800 S$ 900
Accelerate examination S$ 1,200 S$ 600
Accelerate response to examination objections S$ 150
The acceleration fees are in addition to the applicable official fees payable for requesting search and examination or requesting examination.
To qualify for SG Patents Fast, the following conditions must be met:
-
The patent application must not be a divisional application in Singapore;
-
The acceleration request must contain 20 or fewer claims; and
-
The acceleration request must be made at the time of filing the request for search and examination or the request for examination.
There is a monthly cap of 5 requests per entity (individual or corporate). This cap does not apply to requests for acceleration of subsequent office actions.
SG Trade Marks Fast
The SG Trade Marks Fast programme simplifies the process for filers to fast-track their trade mark applications and receive the first examination report (or notice of publication, as applicable) within three to six weeks from the date of application.
To make the programme more accessible, applicants will not require:
-
A related patent application; or
-
Full adoption of pre-approved descriptions of goods and services from IPOS’ Classification Database.
However, if the descriptions are pre-approved, this will eliminate potential objections on the specification of goods/services.
The qualifying criteria and application process for the SG Trade Marks Fast programme are as follows:
-
The application is:
-
A national trade mark application (i.e. filed directly with IPOS); and
-
Not a certification or collective mark; and
-
-
The acceleration request must be made at the point of filing, with the payment of the acceleration fee.
For trade mark applications with multiple classes, the acceleration request will automatically apply to all classes in the application.
The following official fees for acceleration are applicable:
Trade mark application For classes that fully adopt For classes that partially or do not adopt
IPOS preapproved descriptions IPOS pre-approved descriptions of goods
Request for acceleration S$ 200 per class S$ 250 per class
The acceleration fees are in addition to the applicable official trade mark filing fees payable to IPOS.
Government schemes to support IP acceleration costs
There are various Government schemes to support filers with their IP acceleration costs. Under the Enterprise Innovation Scheme (EIS), businesses conducting trade or business activities can claim enhanced tax deduction on qualifying IP registration costs, including IP acceleration fees. Alternatively, eligible businesses may convert qualifying expenditures into a cash payout to offset their innovation costs. For more information on tax deduction and EIS, please refer to the IRAS website on IRAS | Tax Treatment of Business Expenses (M-R) and IRAS | Enterprise Innovation Scheme (EIS).
The Enterprise Development Grant (EDG), which is intended to help Singapore companies grow and transform, may also be leveraged by Singapore filers to support their IP registration and IP acceleration costs. For more information, please refer to Enterprise Singapore’s website on Enterprise Development Grant (EDG).
